Prints Update

Journal Entry: Thu May 13, 2010, 10:25 AM

*So anyway, we've now added some of our favorite prints to be available again. For now, this is all we have available, as we're looking into other print services still to see if DA is where we'd continue to be most happy selling our work. However, if you'd like us to make a certain print available again just tell us and we will.

Update - Apparently there was a memo sent out about this? We missed this, as we've had a busy month and simply probably didn't notice it or read it. This is a default thing now, even on the prints we've had up forever? Well, we're super unhappy then and we'll look into other print services, because honestly it took forever to get all the prices set the way we wanted them and we don't want to go back through 300 prints and change the prices so that we make more than 50 cents. :(

We're sorry to anyone who is wanting to support us and buy our prints. We've just had to disable them. For some reason, the prices we have had set forever were changed to a very low profit on every single one of our photos. We sold three prints for less than a dollar apiece, which obviously was a big enough profit loss for us to anger us, since we're by no means rich. I don't know if this is a glitch but a Help report has been filed. Otherwise, we've been hacked. Our password has been changed.
In the meantime, obviously we aren't going to allow prints to be sold at that profit rate of less than a dollar for decent sized prints, so we are not offering prints at this time until it's fixed. We don't have the time to go through each print one by one and fix all the prices. :(

To my knowledge i've never sold a print so have not been affected by this, sounds like a glitch from them updating the system. funny how glitches are always in their favour and never ours, maybe im just cynical :giggle:

I can't believe they'd change the prices like that, without notice... totally unfair! I hope that you get it all figured out soon! I was honestly going to look into buying some of your prints the other day, as we need to decorate our new apartment!

I would rather buy directly from you guys (because I know where the money will be headed) than through DA. I am thinking of going back to CafePress. Much easier, I think.

I've just noticed there is an "update all royalties at once" button unerneith all of the price change option place. You still have to do it one picture at a time but at least you don't have to go through every button you can do it all at once so that is SOMETHING ..... I think.

Drat, I guess it's back to buying directly from artists instead of buying prints from DA.

I sell prints through my website using an affliate program with another company. Happy to note you the details if that helps. :rose:

When I saw that news about lowering prices I thought that they had some kind of a deal with all artists and applied that change. It is not fair for them to set your profit without even bothering informing you. I mean other information than a simple news! It is your own piece of art :S Weird idea of them to attract the art lovers since they can lose many valuable artists. Shame.

I really hope you can find a way out of this or they would set everything back to how it was

heh I just noticed this as well. I saw that they posted a notice about it a few weeks ago...but all I saw was something about us making more profit, which honestly this is the complete opposite so I didnt read all of it :hmm: I sold a print a few days ago and noticed I only made about a $1 also, which I thought was weird, cause I should've made about $3 or $4, but I didnt think anything of it at the time. But a 9x12inch print sold for only $7, and I originally had it for $16...so whoever bought it got a good deal I guess...the artists sure aren't though.

They better fix this, or at least have the option of setting ALL prints to whatever % you want...I'm changing mine to my profits being 60% but having to go through all of them is kind of a pain :stab:

Those were my exact thoughts. And I, too, was going to change them all to 60% (funny enough), but it would just take so so much time to go through them all.

They did do a big prints update recently, they made postage cheaper and changed the base prices and the way DA gets its cut which of course would result int everything getting set back to a default price because their cut came out of our mark up before.

Ah ha! I found the news articles for you:

I hope they help you, I thought in general it looked good though I don't benefit much since I already had a permanent premium prints account but I never altered the prices, I can see how that would bug you.

Eh it's really bad for us actually. The base prices rising makes buying our own prints unreasonable now, as well as the fact the default prices are very low in comparison to much much we sell our prints for. The way it is now, we'd make like $1 off a print, which we'd have to sell a whole lot more of to make it worthwhile. It also devalues our work. If we go through and reset all our prices one by one, it still ultimately is worse overall.
The base prices seem to be way higher now...

I've never sold anything either, so I also didn't notice, but I don't relish the idea of going in and changing all the prices either.

I went and checked and decided to leave them as is untill I find a British site that works the same way Deviantart/cafepress work I'm sticking with DA. Selling the small prints at low profit is better than not selling them at all.

Lilyas then set up a poll asking where people think is the best place to sell on line.

That discussion is here:

:buymyprints: :pointr: :[link]

I once had the name of the printer that dA uses. That printer will sell direct to us, same price they charge dA, I was told. I never got around to checking the details. My laptop fried with that info lost in it.

Hope this helps. Maybe you could start a similar poll here? See what your readers say. I think I will do the same on my page.

Thanks for sharing info.

I'm going to link you over to a thread discussion under another journal that might help. Same discussion as this one, and then you can read what people over there had to say.

This is Lilyas journal on the same topic:

not an error DA did this without anyone knowing they were...they think the were doing us a favor by adding to the print price and not taking part of the print action...yes they are screwing us over again....alot of people are shopping elsewhere to buy prints....they also made premium prints into being able to buy prints at cost....

I just checked my prints after reading this.. and holy shit, they have 4x5 prints set at like 50 cents? What the shit is this? I didn't buy a prints account years ago to make a DIME profit from a print. It's going to be so difficult to change all my prints prices.

Yeah... exactly... I wouldn't even bother selling 8x10s if I knew I'd be making like a dollar off them. And I don't have the time to go through disabling and changing everything.

Did you happen to catch the changes dA made to the Prints program? If not, you can read about them here: [link]

Also, here's a link to the article about the changes to the Prints Agreement as a result: [link]

I think it's happened to everyone who has prints on here. I've seen it in a couple different journals, something about the base price getting raised I think. That or DA is having some sort of sale (the kind where they don't lose money, only the artists who make them that money).

Personally, I think it's pretty BS. I used to use the print system here but it's such a ripoff to the artist. Now I just use Etsy. It's more handling for the artist, but you actually get to keep all the money (minus 20 cents USD) that you sell the prints for. The only draw back is you have to have the prints made and shipped yourself.

I hope this is just an error. We had a whole ton of prints available that we had set our own prices for. If it's true that they just went in and automatically changed our prices and determined themselves how much profit we just made, we'll no longer be using this service. I'm hoping that it's a mistake. There's no way we could be expected to go through our prints one by one and change the prices they auto-set if we didn't like them?

(oops, didn't mean to underline that much lol)
Yeah, it isn't right for them to assume what's ok as profit to the artist. If anything, they should just lower the base price in order to lower the sale price of the prints.

We'll hope it's a mistake or glitch though...

Yeah I got the same notice from DA, I believe people selling the prints will be making a larger percentage off of them now but they might've changed all the prices because of it.

:icongirltripped:

That wouldn't make sense to automatically change the prices that the artist's have set though. That would mean they're trying to control the profit percentage...

DA sent me a news thing saying that prints would be cheaper or something for the next 3 months, I didn't really read it though because I don't sell prints on here... but maybe that's why?
Reply
:icongirltripped:

I hope not. I missed out on reading that as well, but it would make no sense to me that they'd go through and auto-change the prices that the artists have set, thus determining the artist profit themselves.
